In my sophomore year of high school I was given the chance to travel to Villars Sur Ollon, Switzerland to compete in the Ski Mountaineering World Championships. On this trip I got the chance to meet many different people of many different nationalities and spend lots of time with them. It was a great opportunity to experience many different cultures during this 2 week period. It was also amazing to get to race against all these different people with different backgrounds who value the same things as me, yet also have a different perspective and approach to the sport. Although everyone was different from me we all got the chance to talk to one another and learn that despite our differences we also shared a lot in common as well. The sport of ski mountaineering is very complex and there is a lot that goes into a race, so it was great to see all these different approaches to this difficult sport and to learn from one another.
The person that I want to live down the hall from me is somebody who comes from a completely different background from me, yet shares similar interests to me. I think it would be amazing to learn about other cultures and different lifestyles while also learning how similar we are to one another. Ideally this person would be able to sit down and focus all their attention on their classwork and how they can make the most of the education that they are receiving at CU Boulder, yet at any spare moment they are ready to get outside and do something fun. I think it is very important to be able to balance school work with your social life and I would hope that the person living down the hall from me would understand and share this ideology. This person would be excited to collaborate and study with me, while also wanting to relax and focus on things outside of the classroom.
I have quite a few reasons that I would love to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP. First off, I think it would be amazing to be living with a group of students who are studying the same sort of material that you are. Living in a community of students who are taking the same classes as you sounds like the a great way to make the most of the education that you receive. There will be times where the material is challenging and the classwork is hard and by living in this community you don't feel alone in your struggles. Instead, you have people to talk to about the classes, people that can help you study and better your understanding, and maybe even I will be able to help others that need help studying for their challenging courses. I also think that by living with this group of students I would find many people that have interests similar to mine, while also being totally different from me. Living in a community of engineers will help me focus on my major and help me get the education that I need for the career that I want. Ideally being surrounded by many hard working students I will be heavily inspired to put my best effort into each and every class, every single day.
