I've not been able to participate in any study abroad experiences thus far; that said, I've been lucky enough to connect with a number of people from various cultures during high school and through initiatives online. Through these friendships and connections I've been able to learn about various traditions, beliefs, cultures, and lived experiences from across the world.
The only thing I know I would want is someone who is open-minded. I have trouble thinking of an ideal hallmate; I'd hope for someone I agree with on larger issues, such as global problems to combat, but perhaps that I disagree with on smaller things, like what class is most fun or the best way to do a certain task. I'd want someone who is open-minded and welcoming, but I'd enjoy a chance to know someone with different opinions, habits, traits, etc. than my own. I'd like to live with someone who encourages my growth as a person by challenging my ideas and beliefs, and I'd like to be able to do that for someone else in turn. I'm not too concerned with their appearance or physical characteristics or things like that, though.
I'd like to be a part of the Global Engineering RAP because I'd like to learn how to put my skills to helpful use. As part of my high school's FIRST Robotics team, I helped design a game meant to mimic wildfire prevention work, which gave me inspiration for how robots could be used in such cases, or in other environmental protection areas.
I believe the Global Engineering RAP would do similar things; provide me with challenges, present problems I can try to solve, and (most importantly, I think) introduce me to people I could create for and communities I could create with. I think collaboration and teamwork is crucial for good work to happen, and I think having more opportunities for cooperation and community with problem-solving as a focus would be a boon.
As for my own contributions: I'd try to be a friend to those wanting one. I would do whatever I could to bolster our community; I'd do my best to be a friend or positive acquaintance for fellow RAP engineers. I enjoy being someone that people can rely on to show up and help, and I'd hold myself accountable to be such a person. I would try to be a resource/aid across situations; academic, social, personal, what-have-you. I really love seeing people shine and helping them get there, in whatever way works best for them.
I also like to bake & cook, so I could provide some fun snacks or such when there's enough space/time/ingredients. I like communities, and being a part of one.
