I have most of my experience travelling domestically, both to the east and west, as I live in Illinois. However, I do have some experience travelling to Europe and Mexico when I was younger, and I was supposed to travel to China until quarantine. Although most of my travelling has been to communities designated as “first world,” I still noticed a significant amount of wealth inequality that has been created by the economic and social systems in place in these countries. I realize that the only way to fix the problem of poverty lies in solving the systems that create it in the first place, and I want to use that insight in preparation for the type of engineering I want to pursue in the Global Engineering RAP.
I would want to live down the hall from someone who: has conviction in trying to have a positive effect on the world in whatever they do; is interested in building community, trying innovative solutions to the problems we are presented, and experiencing new things; comes from a different background than myself and would have new perspectives to offer me; wants to explore the surrounding area, spend time outdoors, and study abroad at some point.
I want to become a member of the Global Engineering RAP as I want to engineer in context of the world around me, contribute to efforts to lift up struggling communities, and improve the systems that perpetuate things like global poverty. Most of my educational experience has been in small schools, so I would love to be part of a community that shares my values and is smaller than the rest of the campus. I have experience in service and leadership primarily with being a student mentor at my high school, where I helped freshman transition to high school from whatever background they may have come from. I want to continue to try and have a positive impact on my own community, but also expand that impact outwards towards the global community, which is why I think the Global Engineering RAP will help me grow as a person and engineer, as well as why I think I can help contribute to the community.
