I have visited many countries outside the United States. My family makes it a goal to travel abroad every other year. We used always to fly "Space Available," a program the military offers to active-duty families. Essentially hitching a ride to a foreign land offers an added element of uncertainty to the adventure and has resulted in some of our most authentic experiences with other cultures. By experiencing a vast number of diverse cultures, from Japan to Chile to Germany and Europe, my travels have endowed me with a global perspective. With my family, I visited Tokyo and experienced the big city. I then volunteered at a summer camp for ostracized children in the countryside. When I was young, my family lived in Madrid for two years. I have seen first-hand electrical engineering challenges in Belize and Mexico, and I want to be a part of a program that will help me further explore how engineering will change the world.
In the Global Engineering RAP, I would want to encounter people of diverse backgrounds and experiences. Down the hall from me, I would want someone serious about making a difference in the world. I would want them to be determined and studious because they want to make the most of their time at Boulder. I would want someone eager to jump into an intellectual conversation about whatever and who would have lots to contribute. I would not want them to agree with me on everything. I would want them to be able to support their viewpoints and help me grow as well.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP because I have never been satisfied with doing the bare minimum. My desire to excel and my interest in understanding global issues and cultures makes me want to be a part of this RAP. I think being a part of this community can help me become an engineer that has an impact on the lives of others. I want to benefit the world around me and elevate others through my work, which is what Global Engineering is all about.
