In June 2019, I fundraised myself a trip to Guatemala with my school for a service trip, as well as fund-raising $3,000 for materials to build a home for a widow. With a group of 30 kids we spent the week build a home for a widow, repaint a school, bagging food donation and giving out clothes. In our free time we would visit kids at the hospital or orphanage. I am sad not to have been able to go this past year, but I look forward to leading the trip in 2021. This was a life changing experience, seeing extreme poverty changed my outlook on life and built up my awareness for the scale of the global poverty issue. We visited a village which was built around a burning landfill. After providing assistance to the locals through a soup kitchen we were afforded the opportunity to interact with them. When speaking with an old man he explained that he would walk around picking up aluminum cans to resell them to a recycling center for pennies. Our guide also shared the story of a child who was dying of a common form of lung disease because his parents did not have access to a doctor or medicine which was located in Guatemala City over a 3-hour drive away! This experience not only broke my heart but more importantly started a fire within me which yearns to live a life dedicated to helping others.
I would describe someone living in the Global Engineering Hall as, a young bright individual who is dedicating to working hard in the classroom in order to be able to perform at a high level when faced with a challenge in the real world. A friend who is willing to selflessly help with a project you are struggling with even with no personal gain for themselves. Is interested in traveling the world not just for cool Instagram pictures but to have a global impact through service and become more culturally diversified. Finally at a core would rather spend his/ her Saturday at a soup kitchen than on the slopes because they find fulfillment and joy in supporting others.
"Activity without purpose is the drain of your life"
I found extreme purpose in helping others during my time in Guatemala and hope that the global engineering RAP will help me to build a network which affords me the opportunity to make that purpose a more permanent part of my life. Not only would I be surrounded by a group of highly motivated individuals who have a common vision to reduce global poverty. Being in this RAP would encourage me to take every school project as a challenge to push my purpose by helping make a difference in global poverty. I am a driven leader with experience planning, motivating and executing. Being an Eagle Scout at 14 I have placed myself in hundreds of leadership positions even leading a 600 active member organization for over 2 years. I am also trilingual being born in France and growing up in a French household as well as serving as a primary translator during our time in Guatemala. I hope to bring my assets to building a more galvanized community which is obsessed with applying engineering to global impact.
