Environmental Engineering
English (5), German (1)
With my family, I have explored parts of the Colorado River basin. As this region is continually growing, the demand for water has as well. This leads to complex engineering solutions, such as the Hoover Dam. These engineering solutions all revolve around getting adequate water to regions like Las Vegas while attempting to minimize the environmental impact. My interest in the science behind these watersheds led me to join my local River Watch program. Through this program, I studied the health of my local watershed and reported my findings to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife division. Although this activity was localized, I feel like it gave me hands-on experience in environmental science, which I hope to translate into environmental engineering.
I would hope to have a neighbor who has come from a drastically different background than me. I think having someone who grew up in a different culture with different hobbies as a neighbor is incredibly important, as it fosters personal growth. In my education so far, I have felt as though many of my classmates are too similar to me; we think and approach problems similarly. However, by having more variety among learning styles and backgrounds, I believe creativity would flourish.
I want to join the Global Engineering RAP in hopes of expanding my views. Being a part of this diverse community would introduce me to new opinions and viewpoints, which is incredibly important to me as a growing student. Having a greater understanding of those from different backgrounds is applicable in nearly every aspect of modern life, and would certainly foster my success as a global citizen. The idea of global engineering also meshes quite well with my intended major of environmental engineering. I’ve been inspired by organizations such as Engineers Without Borders, and I know this RAP tackles these global issues. Through this exposure to the real-life applications of engineering so early on in my college career, I will be better suited to join the engineering workforce.
