Every few summers, my family travels to South Korea to visit our relatives. When we visit my Dad's side of the family, we stay in the heart of Korea's capital, Seoul. This city is filled with ancient culture and tradition, as well as some of the most innovative technology the world has seen. Even though I love most parts about the city, there are still several parts that people struggle with: pollution, lack of space, shortage of resources, poor sanitation (especially with water), and many more. After I lived in a crowded apartment block and saw my grandparents boil their water daily, I found myself wanting to directly help Koreans, and anyone else living in less fortunate circumstances for that matter, much more. I realized that I took living in Colorado, a well developed country with fresh air and access to clean water, for granted.
Although Seoul had several problems that seemed hard to eliminate completely, I've witnessed how engineering can help overcome them. I've seen how nuclear energy has been utilized to reduce carbon emissions, how technology has made public transportation much easier, and how clean energy has been used more frequently in response to climate change. Although my travels have not taught me engineering skills directly, they have shown me how engineering can help societies at large. They have motivated me to learn as much as I can about engineering in high school and at CU Boulder, so I can contribute to making a positive difference in communities around the globe. Joining the Global Engineering RAP is a perfect way to do this because I can apply all that I have learned to the various projects and research the program entails in order to help solve the various problems facing humanity through engineering.

I want to live down the hall from someone who is similar to me. I want us to share a passion for engineering, and a desire to serve the international community. I would admire the fact that they do not care about being ‘weird’ or ‘nerdy’ and embrace their differences instead. Hopefully they take pride in hard work, and are willing to take risks or make mistakes if it means they can learn something new. I also wish that they understand the importance of physical health, and would be willing to play volleyball with me sometime. I would encourage them to talk to me after having a bad day, or vent to me about their problems if they need to. Most importantly, I wish for them to be respectful and considerate toward others by treating others the way they themselves want to be treated.
That being said, I would definitely not want to live with a clone of myself. I want to get to know someone who is different from me, because we can grow close despite our differences. I want to have intriguing conversations with someone who has a different background and major as me, so I can let their perspective inform mine. I want to live with someone who is better and worse than me in various ways, so we can help each other grow and improve in areas where we need to. For example, we could work on a coding project where they teach me more about databases while I teach them more about web design.

One of the main reasons I want to join the Global Engineering RAP is to become friends with other engineers with varying backgrounds and majors. This will allow me to continue working on my interpersonal, teamwork, and leadership skills, all of which are required to be a successful engineer and person overall. In addition, I want to learn how people from varying fields can work together efficiently. I have not worked on many engineering projects involving a large team, so this will be a good opportunity to learn more about the process.
Another reason I want to join the program is to help those in need. There are several engineers in this day and age that work for themselves, but I want to work for the benefit of others. By joining this program, I hope to gain cultural awareness and develop the ability to tackle widespread issues like poverty, hunger, and lack of sanitization. I want to be proud of serving the community at large with my engineering skills, yet driven to improve and adapt to whatever hurdle comes next.
Personally I hope to be a reliable engineer within the program. I want people to be relieved knowing that I will try my best to complete any individual duties I may have. I want to take leadership whether it is stepping up when no one else wants to, or asking critical questions that need to be asked. Along with that, I will do my best to make everyone feel welcome and embrace the community’s diversity. Whether it is asking how someone’s day is going or just greeting someone with a smile, I want to act in a way that reflects my positive attitude.
To conclude, I would love to be part of the Global Engineering RAP because the community has a cause that I have utmost respect for: Engineering for the good of humanity.
