A few years ago I had the opportunity to participate with my peers on a youth missionary trip in the summer which enlightened me about rural poverty, even in our own country. We worked together to help those in need, whether it was manual or spiritual labor we were there to help. Another experience that has prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP was my trip to Mexico two years ago. While on this trip I was exposed to a whole new type of need that people experience. Houses lacked working electricity and running water, while children lacked shoes and food in their stomachs. This was poverty unlike any I had seen before. This trip was formative to my choice of studies because I never wanted to see people having to live like that again, and I want to do anything I can to make sure that becomes our world’s reality.
The type of person I would want to live next to in the Global Engineering RAP is someone who challenges themselves and those around them. Someone who is dedicated to positively influencing others to reach the shared goal of reducing poverty, creating opportunity, and making the world a better place. I want to surround myself with individuals who are willing to participate in study groups and engage socially.
Membership in the Global Engineering RAP sounds like a great fit for me. I am a social person and am seeking an environment with interaction and mutual support. Throughout high school I was involved in numerous service organizations at school, church and across the community. Within those groups I was afforded the opportunity to organize and lead multiple food and clothing drives and found it incredibly rewarding to serve others. These experiences provided great depth to my understanding of others. I feel positively compelled to serve others through direct service and collaboration. During my time at CU I will be enrolled in the Army ROTC program whereI will become an officer in the military upon graduation from the University. With my chosen career, I will be exposed to varied politics, geography, economies and cultures. Engagement in the Global Engineering RAP will better prepare me to make a meaningful impact as a team member in the Army Corps of Engineers. I am excited to contribute personally to the residential hall life building upon prior experiences. To enhance learning in high school, I often participated in study groups. I also have experience working as a peer tutor. Each of these experiences proved beneficial to both classmates and myself. I look forward to being a positive member of similar groupings at the collegiate level.
