I could always remember my trips back to China, the place where I grew up. From the long airplane ride, to the restless first night from jet lag, I remembered all the details. I saw large skylines hidden in the misty backgrounds. I remembered the smell of food, and the sound of people yelling and honking out of their cars. It brought me back to a place I had almost forgotten about. My mother was born here, so was my father, and so was I. Despite speaking Mandarin at home, I miss the feeling of speaking to others in my native language. I passed by the school that I used to go to, I passed by the mall that I always loved going to, I passed by our first house. While this trip was just to visit family and some old friends, I learned even more about the culture here. I traveled to other cities, as my mom told me the ancient history of each structure we saw. Every city had a unique background, and their locals each with their unique accents. Through these trips, I’ve learned to adapt to new environments, learn about different cultures, and refine my language fluency, which have prepared me to become a successful member of the Global Engineering RAP.
I hope that the person down the hall cares about others just as much as they care about themselves. Even if their approach to different situations may be a bit different than mine, even if they're a little shy or a little too brash, I hope that they try to make a positive impact on not just the CU Boulder community, but on other communities around the world as well. I want this person to be kind to all, and embrace others without judgement. The kind of person who always brings a smile, who’s always there to help when you need it, and knows how to make a positive impact on others. I also hope that I can be that kind of person to this person as well. I will try my best to be that person down the hall, who is always willing to help others, no matter what, and through this program learn to understand others and build a better community.
I hope that by being part of the Global Engineering RAP here, I can better help out other communities around the world. I hope to understand more cultures and learn new languages, in order to help out more communities. I believe my experience as part of the Global Engineering community will help me create solutions as an engineer that will go on to help other communities. I wish to use whatever experience I get from CU Boulder and from the Global Engineering program to create these solutions, and improve them. I will try to participate in as many community activities as possible, from helping with other projects, to simply volunteering, so I can strive to make our community the best it can be. In the future I hope to guide newer students as they join our community, as well as aiding them in whatever they need. In doing so, we can create a tighter community, one who is not only focused on improving the CU Boulder community as a whole, but also helping each other within the Global Engineering program as well.
