Traveling abroad has always been something I want to scratch off my bucket list. Growing up in a multicultural household has shown me the importance of a global perspective, and made me excited to travel the world.

My mom is from China. Every Chinese New Year, we call my grandparents and participate in different festivities, such as giving red envelopes and performing traditional Chinese music on my violin. My dad is from South Africa and has extended family in Europe. He brought many stories and traditions with him when he moved to America. The diverse culture around me has taught me to appreciate people from different backgrounds and prepared me to have conversations about global issues. I hope to travel abroad soon!
I want the person living down the hall to be funny and outgoing, and someone who is fun to be around. I want them to share my eagerness to learn and be able to study with me until 1 am. I hope they are easygoing and willing to try new things, like cooking or eating food from different cultures. Somebody who, like me, is creative and caring, and nice to everyone they meet. I hope that they love music to the point where we could listen to it for hours, and have different opinions than I do so that we can have spirited conversations. Someone who loves hiking, mountain biking, being outdoors, or any number of sports. But really, anybody who enjoys helping others.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP because I’m interested in learning and community. Through high school, I have taken classes such as computer science and global and cultural leadership. The most important thing I learned is the importance of understanding and service.

To make meaningful change, it is important to understand the people you are helping. For example, I participated in a summer program (Dawson Summer Initiative) to create clean drinking water solutions for people in Cambodia, where geographical and socioeconomic considerations were really important. SCLA (Silver Creek Leadership Academy) taught me that service and leadership both require an open mind. For a senior year capstone, I used AI to bring students and senior citizens together through letter-writing, which required me to consider both generations.

I want to learn more about how to impact people from different cultures and how to make a difference with engineering. By joining this RAP, I would be able to reach this goal with help from both the classes I’d take and the people around me.

I’m someone who is always in a good mood and willing to learn. I’m ready to go the extra mile for my friends and support anyone. I’d bring to the residential community experience as a leader who can work well with others. I am excited to be around people who are also interested in making an impact and look forward to collaborating with them.
