Aerospace Engineering
English 5, German 5
I have spent a good portion of most of my summers in my mothers home country of Germany. Me and my mother were both born in Germany the only difference being that she lived there for most of her life. Most of my moms family still lives in Germany so we have always made it a goal to visit them for a few weeks every year. While in Germany I have been able to visit many historic sites and cities. In Dresden I have been able to see what kind of damages the city sustained from from WWII and some of the historic buildings that have stood strong for centuries. When I visited Berlin I was able to walk through the Brandenburg Tor and walk along the remaining parts of the Berlin wall. I find history interesting but being able to see something in person makes everything I was taught more meaningful. Visiting Germans historic cities was very meaningful to me and living in history is something I will never forget, but my favorite memory from Germany was of a very special place in the city of Ingolstadt. This city is knows as the headquarters of my favorite car manufacturer Audi. For me, seeing the Berlin was amazing, but being on the campus of Audi and inside the museum with all of the historic Audis was slightly better. I've been a huge Audi fan for the last few years and love just about anything Audi related. My love of cars came from Audis and all the cars I saw inside the museum inspired me to pursue a career in engineering. Germans can often be know for their engineering and I have felt inspired by some of the amazing machines they have created.
Over the years I have developed quite a few hobbies that don't have a particularly big community associated with them. A lot of the things I have tried are somewhat related to what engineers might do. I have found myself dabbling in the remote control vehicle world for years now and would love to find someone who shares an interest in something like that. I've never really had friends that I could nerd out with over my hobbies, but I've never really hung around other people with interests like mine. I understand that not all engineers are nerds so I would hope I could come across a fellow classmate that I could enjoy being in the fitness center with. I like my nerd stuff but I also love my gym time. I hope that the people around me would come from all different backgrounds and different beliefs so I can broaden my understanding of other peoples lives.
I think the the best possible way to dive into such a difficult major like engineering is to be surrounded by people who have similar aspirations. We might not all have the goal to become engineers working for large aerospace companies, but we all would have the goal to graduate as engineers. I assume that the Global Engineering community would consist of a more diverse group of people from many different backgrounds. I would hope that I could contribute my learning style and small understanding of engineering to help other people in the community if they are unable to comprehend what is being taught. I hope that by joining the community I would be able to rely on others to help me when I struggle and help others when they might be doing struggling themselves. I think having a community to experience college with is very important, and having people in the same boat as you is just as valuable as having a good teacher. I understand college is going to be and I hope I will have the opportunity to experience it with other Global Engineering RAP members.
