My experiences throughout my international bachelorette school and my personal travels have adequately prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP. This is because of my experiences as a career oriented student that my school offers. Of the few times I have been outside of my home state to travel, I often find myself focused more on the issues of homelessness. I have been to California numerous times for this reason and I have worked to understand how California deals with their homeless population. In my own personal research, I have found the reasons as to why housing is as expensive as it is and I want to dedicate my time to finding solutions so that no one has to be homeless. At my school, my research has been fostered by my program. I have written and edited a 50 hour research paper on inaccessibility to housing and how a future architect like myself can help alleviate the stresses of it. My paper looks at homelessness globally and the proposed solutions of certain countries. My own solution involves some systematic change, but a great deal of grit and courage in my solution. Furthermore, at my IB school, I have spent 50 hours learning a new language. I chose Swedish to learn as that is one of my trips that I hope to go on in the future. In going to Sweden, I hope to learn more about the government there and how they approach the problems differently than America. I hope to be able to broaden my expertise even more with taking in new perspectives. I hope that with the Global Engineering RAP I will be able to use my education that I will gain from CU Boulder and apply it to real world problems and find solutions to global issues that I am passionate about.
Global experiences and perspective improve engineering because of the pathological impact it is able to make on engineers. We are able to become passionate about a topic or problem if we have an emotional connection to it. I know this from my own experience as I have learned it during my time in pursuing engineering. For almost my entire life, I have always seen the importance of having housing through some personal experiences when I was younger. I have traveled to California numerous times because that is where a large portion of the homeless population reside. I hear their stories, struggles, and dreams for the future. This works to motivate me to find a solution to their problems. One such story that brings me to the first widely recognized woman engineer, Henrietta Vansittart. She was motivated to continue her fathers work as a propeller engineer when he passed away. I believe that emotions are one of the strongest appeals and the greatest source of motivation. I am excited to start my journey in helping out the homeless populations of America, and I can only hope to be able to solve the problems that they face.
I would love to become a member of the Global Engineering RAP as I have consistently proved myself as a leader and a helper. Firstly, this is due to the fact that I have always strived to help marginalized communities in my space. One such story takes place during a course for rocketry at my school. In my team of 4, there was one girl that was very outspoken by a man in the group. Her ideas were really inspiring to me and I felt as if the guy in my team was not hearing her out because he did not like the fact that it was a woman coming up with ideas. I pulled her aside and I encouraged her to become the team leader because I felt as if her idea would produce a really good result. She was unsure of how well she could do, but I assured her she would do great. Despite having little experience, she was a natural born leader. She was cunning, quick, and incredibly talented. It was by far the best leadership I have been under. In the end, we were proud of the final product and I have no doubt that it was because of her leadership. This demonstrates how I work to empower others to solve problems. This is because I feel as if all engineers need to be bolstered to work together to solve a problem. One person cannot solve much, but a team can take on the world. I want to use my skills of leadership to work with a team in order to address the problems of the residential community. I have done extensive research on homelessness as a global issue and I believe I have a strong solution that I would like to see to fruition. I Hope I will be able to work with like-minded individuals in order to find a real solution to the problems that plague us today.
