English (5), French (3)
I have taken four levels of French and gone on foreign exchange twice, once on individual exchange and once on group exchange, going to different parts of France each time. I hosted both exchange students in my home, assisted them in English while they helped me improve my French, taught them about New Orleans culture/history, and they taught me about French culture/history.
At the end of sophomore year, I had the opportunity to go on global exchange and live with a family in Amiens, France, prompting an interest in learning about other ways of life. Then, I was able to travel to another part of France, Nantes, to learn more about French ways of life. Even within one country, I learned that there are many differences as well as similarities from region to region. I plan to use my passion for learning about other cultures and infrastructure to find the best practices worldwide and implement those ideas in the areas that need them most. This will allow me to be inspired by every country’s infrastructure, creating availability and access to the best technologies.
I have thoroughly enjoyed going on exchange and being surrounded by other students who have gone on exchange. Although going to a foreign country alone was terrifying, I learned about myself and my ability to try new things. I'd like to join the Global Engineering RAP to be surrounded by others who want to broaden their horizons, learn about other cultures, and have new experiences. Being part of the RAP will not only give me access to new opportunities, but I will be able to learn from my peers who are also dedicated to being global citizens. This community will help me learn from others about cultures, infrastructure, and ways of life they have seen and experienced. I would like to contribute by sharing and reflecting on my own global experiences, teaching others about my personal findings and helping broaden other's horizons.
