I have had many travel experiences that have prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP. My favorite is when I travelled to France to visit my sister while she studied abroad in Aix-en-Provence. On the way there I had a long layover in Germany which was incredible since I was able to hear and see native German everywhere in the airport. In Aix I had four days to experience the culture of a smaller french town with the help of my sister as a guide. We spent mornings talking with my family in a cafe and afternoons shopping in Aix’s narrow and beautiful streets. I was fascinated by the different fashion styles and the shopping culture that filled the streets. After that I went to Paris for two days. I love history so my favorite parts of the trip were visiting the Arc de Triomphe and the Louvre. After that I went to London for two days as well. My favorite things to see were the tower bridge and Churchill's war rooms. Overall, the trip was incredible, especially since it was my first time in Europe. I had so much fun hearing so many languages spoken in their natural environment, especially German. I loved getting to ride around on the subway in Paris and London and getting to walk through the beautiful streets. Hanging out with my sister and learning about all of the differences in culture especially with meals and social gatherings.
Global experiences and perspectives improve the field of engineering by grounding engineers and giving them a focused goal. Global experiences give engineers a strong and varied moral background that is incredibly important to not lose while engineering. The objective of engineering is to create and build structures and technologies that serve to help people, and that cannot be achieved without having knowledge of the people an engineer is serving. While that can potentially be achieved within the US, it is far more valuable to have an understanding of the widely diverse cultures and customs from people across the world so that an engineer can help all those people more effectively. Along with that the needs and conditions that an engineer seeks to satisfy are not the same across the world, and a wide range of global knowledge and experiences help an engineer to work more efficiently to serve more people. Personally, I want to someday work with Engineers Without Borders, where a wide range of global experiences and perspectives will help me use my engineering skills to improve the world by empowering communities in need.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP because of my love of global learning and goals as an engineer. I am passionate about travel and worldly studies. Geography and world history are incredibly interesting to me, and I want to keep learning more about them even though I am studying engineering. I love learning German and am excited by the opportunity to learn more languages so I can explore more of the world. I spend a lot of time outdoors and want to explore every corner of the natural world. I also want to work with Engineers Without Borders because I want to be able to build a better world for all people with my skills. The Global Engineering RAP would give me engineering skills that would greatly benefit my ability to work in EWB. Beyond that the Global Engineering RAP will help me be more globally aware in my engineering career and be conscious about the social and environmental impacts of my projects. One of the things I can contribute to the RAP is language abilities with German since it is a rarer language for high school students to know or learn. I also have quite a bit of experience in worldly travel both through my own experience and learning from my sister who has studied abroad for a full year.
