The travel experience that prepared me most for the Global Engineering RAP happened when I was four and five years old. My family moved to Peru and I began attending a Preschool there. That is where I made friends, learned Spanish, and learned about the culture and food. This experience gave me a foundation for understanding people who grew up differently than me along with a fluency in Spanish that allows me to communicate with more people.
Global experiences can encourage engineers to not focus on only solving their own problems, but the problems of other around the world. In Peru, water quality is a major problem that could be improved if engineers from other countries came together to solve it. Some people have problems in their lives and other people have the experience and knowledge to be able to solve them; If all engineers thought globally, it would make the world a better place.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder because I think that hearing the perspectives of other people who understand global problems will contribute to my understanding of the world and help me develop goals as an engineer of what I want to accomplish. I also believe that my perspective could also help other members of the Global Engineering RAP understand why it is so important to not only focus on the U.S.
