I have had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica, Germany, Mexico, and Canada. In Costa Rica and Mexico, I was exposed to the contrast of the wealth and beauty of the country and the poverty of the same country. As a future environmental engineer, I was struck by the disparity between the areas of opulence, such as surfing, dining, and hiking, compared to communities that had poor access to basic resources. This instilled a desire in me to advocate for the underserved globally, to work towards equal accessibility to water, electricity, etc, and to become an environmental engineer.
It would be amazing to live near someone who is passionate, funny, and empathetic. Someone who desires to make the world better by small but impactful changes. Someone who believes that clean water, clean air, and sustainable living are a right for all of us, not for just the wealthiest. And, if they play guitar, all the better!
Ultimately, I want to travel and work in communities where basic resources are not a given. Growing up near the ocean, water became a part of my life. I have spent my summers swimming, surfing, lifeguarding, but also picking up trash and watching the process of dredging the bay to help combat the shrinking shoreline. Amidst the beauty of the water, it is humbling to realize that the majority of the world does not have access to clean water. Being in a community of likeminded people will help me broaden my thinking of both the problems of access to basic needs like water as well as possible solutions. As a "beach" girl, my passion is water and I hope to study and collaborate with other students who believe that water is life. Clean water, potable water, accessible water.
