Last summer I visited several towns on Mexico’s Pacific coast, where I saw the environmental and social effects of the living and economic situation there. It’s hard to imagine these issues until you’ve actually experienced them. I’m a big traveler and have been to cities all across the United States, and even a few in Europe, but never had I been so impacted. Everywhere were buildings on the verge of collapse, highways covered in trash, and rivers of waste being spewed into the ocean. I realized how much I wanted to help and come up with solutions to these problems. This is something I am passionate about working on and sharing with others. I brought this experience with me into my senior year where I am the senior leader of the Environmental club. In the past we’ve focused on our school community, but I wanted to engage the club in doing more. I organized several fundraisers where we raised money for national and international environmental organizations. It feels good to know that for how small I feel in my community, I helped organize an event that impacted a global community. This is something I intend on continuing to learn about and supporting, which is why I feel prepared for the Global Engineering RAP.
The person I would want to live down the hall from me is someone who not only shares my interests and passions, but offers different experiences and ideas too. I see the Global Engineering RAP as a community, and in order for a working and successful community we need diversity in experience and problem solving. Respect is also really important for me to have in my living space. Respect for others, for the space, for themselves, all these types of respect, and lack of, are felt by everyone around a person. In more detail: I would want someone who takes their academics seriously but also wants to go out and have fun: skiing, hiking, CU clubs, etc.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP because I want to be able to make global connections during my time in college and in my career after. I’m passionate for the world not only in a travel and entertainment way, but also in an activism and impactful way. This experience, in which I will learn how to engineer with the environment, people, and global issues in mind, will allow me to enter the world with abilities and ideas that I wouldn’t have gained otherwise. Being in this community where I will be working alongside others who share these passions will grow my social skills which is necessary for advocating in the world. I plan to contribute to this community by being someone who puts in effort, time, and enthusiasm. I want to be a part of this community for its goals and focuses, not to say I “completed” something extra in my college career.
