Chemical Engineering
English(5), French(3)
I have been lucky enough to travel out of the country on multiple different occasions. I have visited France one time, and Japan six times. Over the course of my lifetime, I’ve spent around 9 months in Japan, and this experience has given me a new perspective on global issues. These experiences have prepared me for the Global Engineering RAP by enhancing my creativity, immersing me in different cultures, and bettering my communication skills. Traveling in Japan increased my creativity just by seeing a different environment, and the Japanese culture and way of thinking. Immersing myself in both French and Japanese culture brought a whole new perspective to my concept of American culture. I have spent a lot of time in Japan with different relatives, and only reached a very elementary level of communication. Since I have not visited in recent years due to COVID-19 I have lost many of those speaking skills, but am currently working on gaining them back. I have had to find unique ways to communicate different aspects of my life and to show them my needs and wants. I think this experience has given me an interesting take on communication with people, not necessarily with words. These experiences with travel have taught me a range of lessons, and I believe these lessons would make me a valuable member of the Global Engineering RAP.
The person I want to live down the hall from me in the Global Engineering RAP has many different qualities. One of the most important qualities would be someone who shows a great deal of compassion. For me, this is very important because it shows that someone is capable of being both a friend and a leader. Having compassion in all situations is important to be a community member that others can reach, and is important to creating a healthy living environment. Another important quality I would want from someone living down the hall from me is integrity. I believe that it is vital to one’s success to surround themselves with people who are honest, and well-meaning. Having someone around who is uncompromising on their own moral standards helps to create an honest open space, with healthy communication. I would want to live with someone who is open to many different ideas and perspectives and is respectful of others no matter their own personal beliefs. Someone who goes out of their way to educate themselves about world events, and different topics, even if their own interests don’t directly align with those topics. I would love to live near people who keep open minds, have good communication, honesty, and a fair amount of creativity.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP at CU Boulder because I believe that it will give me exceptional opportunities in pursuing my degree in Chemical Engineering. I strongly believe that this community will give me access to unique perspectives, specifically global ones, that will allow me to problem-solve in unconventional ways. I have always wanted the chance to study abroad, but I’ve found it very difficult to find a program and community with a global focus specifically on engineering. Being a part of this community would allow me to gain that experience I’ve wanted so much, and also allow me to gain an extraordinary experience that would influence me forever. Living with people who also share these interests would allow me to form new creative solutions, and would allow me to expand my horizons in countless ways. I plan to contribute to the community by providing insights into my own global experiences along with the experience I will gain from pursuing a degree in engineering at CU. As someone with deep roots in my Japanese heritage, I plan to share my experiences from Japan with as many people as I can. I consider my experiences in Japan unparalleled, as for truly immersing oneself in another country’s culture. The qualities I most value in myself include perseverance, honesty, and creativity. I want to bring these qualities into the community, and collaborate with others to create unique perspectives and solutions to different problems. I believe that the opportunity to be a part of the Global Engineering RAP at CU would give me unparalleled opportunities in my education, and leave me with life-changing experiences.
