I have traveled to many states and countries over the years. While California will always be my favorite place to visit, going abroad to other countries with my family was one of the most unique experiences I have had. Most recently, going to Mexico has taught me several things. I took Spanish for the past five years, and was excited at the prospect of using it outside of the classroom for the first time. I was able to use my Spanish skills while in the different cities I visited and got to speak to the people who live there. I truly enjoyed this experience and would like to continue it through study abroad programs at CU Boulder. I would like to study abroad in Japan because I am deeply interested in the culture and language, and also because it is so different from my life in the United States I want to experience something new and interesting.

The Global Engineering RAP will allow me to fulfil these study abroad goals I have had, and are a great way for me to be globally aware while studying engineering. Since engineering impacts many people across the world, it is key to be internationally minded while studying and working through engineering projects.
I would like the person living in my community to be open to trying new things, cooperative, and from a diverse background. When exposed to a new environment, like college, it is necessary to be open to doing things out of our comfort zones and meeting new people. It allows us to discover new things about our peers and ourselves that would otherwise go undiscovered. Additionally, cooperativeness is an important trait to have as a community member because being mindful of the needs of others and the community at large allows everyone to be comfortable around each other without fear of judgement. A thriving community builds each individual up rather than tearing each other down, and so that cooperation between community members is imperative for a positive and uplifting college environment. Moreover, including people in the community from diverse backgrounds allows community members to engage with each other through exploring new cultures and experiences. Learning more about the cultures and experiences of others allows community members to learn more about the world and about the individuals in their community. Having a better understanding of the backgrounds of community members leads to a better understanding of them and their values, which is something that community members can bond over. In order for a community to be successful and create a positive community, they must be willing to do things that may seem uncomfortable yet interesting to them, cooperate with others in order to achieve group goals, and learn more about the backgrounds of community members so that they can better understand each other.
I want to be a member of the Global Engineering RAP because I want to be a part of an academic community that will help me develop as an engineer and as an individual. By living with other engineers, I get to learn about their interests and skill sets. It is important to be aware of all aspects of engineering while studying a specific field because in industry, engineers from all fields will be collaborating together and bouncing ideas off of each other. This RAP will mimic real life engineering situations because engineers from different areas will be able to come together as a community. As someone who is very interested in going into the engineering field after college, the more experience I can get as a college student the more successful I will be. The fact that this program will help me prepare for the engineering industry is the leading factor that drives me to join this RAP.

Personally, I plan on contributing to the RAP community through my involvement in community activities and clubs. Clubs are great ways for students to connect with each other academically and socially. Though this program is academically based, there is a social element to it that can help connect students from different backgrounds studying engineering. I plan on joining academic clubs that not only pertain to my major but also general engineering organizations that invite students from all areas of engineering to participate. That way, I can connect to students not in my major while also bonding over our common interest in engineering. Through these engineering-focused organizations, I will not only develop as an engineer but also as a student at CU Boulder and as an individual.
