Stanley Karombo is a PhD student in the University of Colorado Boulder’s College of Communication, Media, Design and Information (CMDI). Stanley is a former financial journalist and media scholar whose work raises the question of communication, digital media, and the political production of knowledge in the contexts of Africa and the diaspora. His scholarly interests lie at the point of publication of journalism, media sociology, and critical examination of the representation of Black life, identity, and social change. Having worked as an experienced professional in reporting, editing, and the analysis of media in the context of African and international news, he has a more grounded insight into the institutional and technological circumstances through which the discourse of people is formed. Particularly, his work is keen to address how digital transformation, artificial intelligence, participatory media, and other alternative communication systems will impact Global South communities. The work of Karombo has been an expression of a long-term interest in the historical and modern relations of race, migration, cultural memory, and transnational Black experience. He handles these questions in a rigorous scholarly way, a critical way of understanding and exploring media as a place where power, identity and liberation are always negotiated.
