Friends of the Cause Program: The CAAAS’s Allyship and Advocacy Arm

The Friends of the Cause Program is the allyship and advocacy arm of the Center for African and African American Studies (The CAAAS | The Cause). Friends of the Cause are people who believe in the mission of the CAAAS and choose to stand with us, support us, and advocate for our work. They are friends not simply in name, but in practice. They help us create spaces where African, African American, and African diasporan histories, cultures, communities, and ways of knowing and being can be studied, celebrated, and shared. They carry the Cause into classrooms, workplaces, neighborhoods, faith communities, religious institutions, civic spaces, and everyday conversations. They speak when our work needs advocates, show up when our community needs allies, and help open doors that have too often remained closed. To be a Friend of the Cause is to say: I stand with the CAAAS, and I will help the Cause move forward.

But friendship with the Cause also requires us to look inward and examine ourselves. If the CAAAS Beloved Community Program asks what kind of community and society we must build together, Friends of the Cause asks a more intimate question: Who must I become to help build it? Social transformation requires institutional change, but institutions are inhabited by human beings carrying habits, assumptions, fears, privileges, prejudices, possibilities, and power. We cannot ask the world to change while refusing the difficult work of changing ourselves. Allyship becomes more than a declaration; it becomes a discipline of listening, learning, self-examination, self-education, courage, and action. No one needs to arrive knowing everything, and no one ever finally arrives. We learn, we grow, we act, and we begin again.

The guiding Adinkra symbol of Friends of the Cause is Dwennimmen, the ram’s horns, representing humility and strength. Its wisdom speaks directly to the kind of allyship we seek: bring your strength into community, but bring humility with it. Strength without humility can become domination; humility without courage can become silence. Friends of the Cause cultivates both, teaching us when to speak, when to listen, when to stand beside others, and when to stand up for them. Through education, dialogue, service, advocacy, and participation in CAAAS programs, friendship becomes practice and conviction becomes action. The work begins within the individual but cannot end there. We transform ourselves so that we can transform our relationships, our institutions, and our democracy.

Ultimately, Friends of the Cause is committed to helping create a new humanity, one humble human being at a time. An inclusive American democracy requires more than laws and institutions; it requires people capable of recognizing dignity across difference and defending it when it is denied. We invite people of every racial, gender, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, cultural, and national background who seek to stand in solidarity with African, African American, and African diasporan communities to enter this work as allies, advocates, and Friends of the Cause. Come as a friend. Grow into an ally. Become an advocate. Stand with the CAAAS. Carry the Cause. Help us build the Beloved Community, an American democracy gracious and spacious enough for all of us, and a new humanity where every human being can flourish.
