CAAAS PhD Student and Graduate Fellow Nandi Pointer wins the 2025 Stuart Hall Award

Please join us in congratulating Nandi Pointer on an incredible achievement!

The Center for African & African American Studies (The CAAAS | The Cause) is proud to congratulate and celebrate CAAAS PhD Student and Graduate Fellow Nandi Pointer, who has been awarded the 2025 Stuart Hall Award by the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) for her outstanding conference paper, Media Witnessing from the Perspective of Black Audiences.”

About the Paper:

Nandi’s work explores how Black audiences engage with the visual documentation of state-sanctioned violence—particularly videos captured on cell phones and shared across social media. Tracing a lineage from slavery to modern-day police brutality, her paper draws on Richardson’s (2020) concept of Black media witnessing to ask: How do Black viewers see, interpret, and emotionally process these powerful and painful images? By centering the lived experiences of Black audiences, Nandi’s research offers a critical and timely contribution to the discourse on media witnessing and racial justice.

This prestigious recognition honors not only the depth of Nandi’s scholarship but also the importance of amplifying Black perspectives in media studies.

🎉Congratulations to Nandi Pointer! 🎉
