Summer Institute, June 3-28, 2019

The Benson Center invites applicants to a four-week Summer Institute in Boulder. The Institute is open to scholars holding a PhD (or disciplinary equivalent) who are conducting research on some topic that falls within the scope of the Center’s 2019-20 theme, American Identities.

Participants will receive a $5000 honorarium, as well as office space and library privileges. The honorarium is intended to cover all travel and business expenses. The Institute begins on June 3, 2019 and concludes on June 28, 2019. Participants are expected to be in residence in Boulder for all four weeks of the Institute, and to participate in the daily life of the program, which will include both collaborative seminars for the participants and social activities.

Applicants may come from any academic field, but must have a research proposal that relates to the Institute’s theme. Applicants should also demonstrate an interest in contributing to the Center’s mission to foster a diversity of perspectives within the University and to engage with the values of Western civilization.

  • A cover letter, setting out both the applicant’s interest in the mission of the Center and the research project to be pursued over the four weeks of the Institute;
  • A curriculum vitae;
  • The names and email addresses of three references; and
  • A sample piece of research.

Collect all these documents into a single pdf and send it to with the subject heading “Summer Institute Application.” We will begin reviewing applications on March 15, and will indicate here when the application period has closed.
