Special Topics noted below

  • Fall 2019: Ritual Theory
  • Spring 2019: Subtle Bodies: Exploring the Body and Mind relationship in Hindu traditions

This class addresses what it means to be embodied in the cosmologies and conceptions of Hindu traditions. For this we look at notions of the body, including the subtle body, and how the mind and body form a unity to make a person, or not. We will look at general and theoretical understandings of the relationship between mind and body and also explore this relationship in the context of traditions in Hinduism, including Tantra, ascetic and devotional traditions. Students are also encouraged to take some of the theoretical insights from the course and apply them for a final project to any religious tradition they find most interesting, including Western forms of religious expression as well as Asian forms.
