Profile

Jianmin Shao is Assistant Professor of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. Professor Shao received their Ph.D. in Psychology with a Graduate Emphasis in Feminist Studies and a specialization in Anthropologies of Medicine, Science, and Technology from the University of California, Irvine. Trained as a feminist anthropologist and psychologist, they conduct research in the areas of Queer and Trans Health, Feminist Anthropology, Medical Anthropology, and China Studies.
 
Professor Shao's current book project is an ethnography of “trans-relations,” which examines how identity-based interventions in China reproduce trans vulnerabilities within already uneven geopolitical and sociohistorical contexts. Their previous work has appeared in Journal of Counseling Psychology, Psychology & Sexuality, and Journal of GLBT Family Studies. Their research has been supported by the Social Science Research Council and the Institute for Citizens and Scholars, among others. Prior to joining CU Boulder, they were an Assistant Professor at San Diego State University.
