Profile

Jiacheng Liu specializes on social and cultural history of modern China, with particular emphasis on the subfields of gender, urban culture, theatre and performance. Her current book project explores how actresses, previously banned by the Qing dynasty, entered into a male-dominated profession, reshaped the theatre repertoire and performance, and negotiated the social norms of gender and sexuality on and off stage. It highlights the role of actresses and their performance in creating “alternative modernities” as a process of indigenization and hybridization.
