Angus is a historian, who received his BA in History from Cambridge, an MA in Japanese Studies from the University of Washington, and a PhD in History from Stanford. He has taught Japanese, East Asian, and global history at Wake Forest University and SOAS University of London, where he also designed and convened a new BA programme in Global Liberal Arts and served as an Associate Dean for Learning and Teaching. His own research has focused mainly on the history of modern Japan, with interests in cities, nature, and sport, as well as visual and material culture. He collaborated with colleagues at the British Museum on the permanent Japanese galleries there and served as co-investigator on a multi-year research project on Katsushika Hokusai, which produced a special exhibition at the Museum in 2017. At CAS, he will be completing a book manuscript that examines Japan’s abiding enthusiasm for expos, before beginning some new projects, which continue to situate Japan in regional and global perspective.
