ZMO seeks to select about 5-10 fellows overall (covering doctoral, postdoctoral and senior levels); BGSMCS is looking for 2-4 postdoctoral and senior researchers. The appointments are to be made within the research project MC7 "Political Legitimation". [Fellowship] National Institute of Advanced Studies - Postdoctoral Position

The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore announces a postdoctoral position under the collaborative research project with the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC) at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, entitled "The Great Transformation: Urban Land Markets, Livelihoods and the Growing Ecological Crisis in Asia's Cities". The research project is part of a multi-disciplinary comparative study of neoliberal urban reforms in two Asian cities --Bangalore, India and Jakarta, Indonesia. The international research team will explore the formalization of urban land markets and growing privatization of services driven by neoliberal urban reforms, together with the related expansion in informal land tenure systems and economic activities. Utilizing a mixed methods research design, the project will examine how cities are undergoing distinct forms of urban neoliberalization, how articulations of distinct urban lifestyles are shifting, and how we should theorize and intervene in cities.
We are looking for an exceptional scholar with a keen understanding of critical debates around contemporary urbanization and ongoing transformations in Indian cities to work in the research programme as a Postdoctoral Fellow, based at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore. "Sagar: A South Asia Research Journal" seeks innovative academic writings on the history, society, culture, literature, religion, economics, technology and media of South Asia. The journal was established in 1993 and is published annually online and in print by The South Asia Institute at The University of Texas at Austin. As of August 2012, we have made the transition to peer-reviewed status. Submissions are now coordinated by an editorial collective of UT graduate students and blindly evaluated by an editorial board of advanced scholars in the field. In addition to continuing to publish full-length research articles of the highest quality, we are pleased to introduce two new features in our 2013 issue. For the first, we seek original translations of fiction and non-fiction prose and poetry from South Asian languages to English. For the second, we request response essays of 1500 words or less that consider single texts.
Guidelines: (1) Full-length research articles/: Full-length-articles should be between 8,000 and 10,000 words and should include a one-paragraph article abstract. (2) Original translations:/ Translations should be between 3,000 and 6,000 words and should be preceded by a 300-600 word introduction that contextualizes the text or excerpt. The Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality is seeking to hire a Senior Research Associate to manage a year-long project, "Civil Islam." As a strong supporter of enhancing student life, CSGS, in conjunction with other units at the University of Chicago, has established this program for the academic year 2012-13; the purpose of the program is to promote a critical dialogue about Islam and to serve the needs of a growing Muslim student body. The senior research associate is charged with program planning and execution, policy making, fund raising, grants administration, office management, and staff supervision. The position involves the exercise of independent judgment and requires a mature, experienced academic administrator to competently manage the multiple responsibilities associated with the position. Candidates should hold a PhD. Preference will be given to candidates with a thorough academic knowledge of Islamic studies who have made a substantial contribution to the national and international conversation about Islam, in particular the Muslim diasporas in the United States. Candidates should possess proven organizational abilities and experience in similar large-scale, complex programs as well as excellent intellectual, administrative, and human relations skills. Effective oral and written communication skills and computer literacy are essential. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to conceptualize and implement major initiatives such as program planning and preparation of grant proposals. The ability to lead in a manner conducive to positive morale in a large, collaborative program is also important. Knowledge of the University of Chicago is preferred. Overall, we seek manuscripts that consider the gendered dimensions of sexual, bodily, social, material, political, cultural and intellectual dynamics of empire from a wide range of temporal and geographic settings. In addition to work on the Americas, Western Europe and South Asia, we are especially keen to receive proposals about other parts of the globe, including Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, Central Europe, Eastern Europe and the Middle East. We strongly encourage submissions that focus on the pre-modern period. We invite submissions from scholars in disciplines other than history whose work engages historical methodologies and analyses. Given our intention to produce a volume that is at once analytically rigorous and pedagogically useful, we are interested in articles that offer conceptual or theoretical discussion in addition to empirically-grounded case studies. We encourage potential contributors to submit work that falls under one or more of the following rubrics: labour and bodies; ideas, politics and cultures; goods and commodities; practices and styles. [Journal] K-Pop Politics: Digital Mediation and Global Fandom

The K-pop frenzy is anything but ordinary. On May 1 this year, some 300 French fans holding Korean national flags gathered in front of the Louvre Museum, calling for additional K-pop concerts to be held in Paris. Similar rallies ensued in London’s Trafalgar Square, Poland’s Warsaw, and Columbia’s Bolívar Square. Though on a continuum with Hallyu (the Korean Wave), K-Pop departs from the earlier waves of Korean popular culture in its media specificity, geographic scope and generational focus. Preceding currents of Korean popular culture had centered on the cult of Korean television dramas distributed through conventional mass media (terrestrial, satellite, and cable televisions) to neighboring countries such as Japan, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, etc. The K-pop craze, however, is beyond “Asian” bounds. This year alone, K-pop concerts were held in L.A., New York, Paris, London, Sydney, Tokyo, etc., and K-Pop flash mobs continue to take place in such metropolises as Singapore, Lima, Sao Paulo, Toronto, Jakarta, Vancouver, Dublin, Bergen, and Rome.

[Journal] Special Issue on Constructing Interstitial Heritage: architectures, visions and experiences in the International Journal of Tourism Anthropology

The International Journal of Tourism Anthropology (IJTA), a quarterly from Inderscience, is a refereed international journal that publishes latest and quality research on tourism anthropology. This special issue invites submissions that explore the past and present modes through which alternate cultural heritage can be preserved and encouraged. In particular, it focuses on the realm of the interstice: a space, opening, crevice etc, between things near together or between the component parts of a body. Interstitial heritage can be located between entities as well as within them. By nature, it creates an aperture that forms an alternate field and conduit to existent
structures. It needs not to negate necessarily a prevailing socio-political and economic frame (though it may well do so), but it ultimately provides individuals and groups with a ground on which to construct their environment and express themselves within it rather than be subservient to it. In the city, for example, spontaneous occupations of grounds and temporary archisculptures have offered models of interstitial production. In the ever increasing flow of images during the 20th century, visual strategies aiming to build alternate banks of visual data have grown inside and outside of the constraints of the society of spectacle. In the every day life of an increasingly global world, numerous attempts have been made to propose behaviours and experiences that challenge the predicates of top-down social fabrics.

[Fellowship] The Alistair Horne Fellowship, St. Anthony's College

The Alistair Horne Fellowship provides membership of St Antonys College and financial assistance to a candidate who is researching or writing a significant book on a topic of modern history. Young historians and first authors are encouraged to apply. The Fellowship carries an expenses allowance which is in the order of 10,000 (GBP). However, its objective is not only financial. As a Senior Member of St Antonys College, the Fellow is entitled to use the College library and research centres, and is encouraged to play a full part in the Colleges academic and social life, as well as that of the University as a whole. The Fellow for the academic year 2013/14 will be elected early in 2013. Applications should include a brief covering letter, a brief curriculum vitae not to exceed four pages, a description of the proposed book not to exceed 10 pages, an indication of the authors plans for the year, and the names and contact details of two referees. Please note that doctoral students who intend to use the year to complete their theses are not eligible. In late 1950s, Indian cinema did mange to produce some B-grade SF movies, while on the other hand, SF writing in regional languages, particularly through serialisation in magazines, short stories and later as novels, has slowly but steadily also gained popularity. The present collection is an attempt to explore the available Indian SF literature and films, in the context of India aiming to shape itself as a scientific powerhouse, and analyze the ways in which SF is being read, viewed and accepted in India. [Fellowship] Blakemore Freeman Fellowships & Refresher Grants for Advanced Study of Asian Languages

Blakemore language grants are awarded to individuals pursuing professional careers in fields such as business, academic, law, science, medicine, architecture, engineering, journalism, the fine arts, public service, etc. who would benefit from improved fluency in an East or Southeast Asian language. The Blakemore Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2013 Blakemore Freeman Fellowships and Blakemore Refresher Grants. The postmark deadline for applications is December 31, 2012. For 2013, the Foundation plans to award approximately 12-15 grants for the advanced study of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Khmer and Burmese. The grants cover tuition and a stipend for related educational expenses, basic living costs and transportation, but do not include dependent expenses.
The Blakemore Freeman Fellowships fund an academic year of advanced language study at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing, the International Chinese Language Program at National Taiwan University in Taipei, and similar programs in other countries of East and SE Asia. Where there is no structured advanced-level language program at an educational institution in the country, the grant may provide for the financing of private tutorials under terms set forth in the application instructions. The fellowships are limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. who have an undergraduate degree and are pursuing academic, professional or business careers that involve the regular use of an East or Southeast Asian language. The most important criteria for selection is a focused, well-defined career objective involving Asia in which the regular use of the language is an important aspect.

[Journal] Mechademia's penultimate volume, "Origins"

Call for papers for the ninth and penultimate volume in the Mechademia series: an annual forum from University of Minnesota Press for writing about Japanese popular visual culture. The theme of the volume is "Origins," and the deadline for submissions is January 4. The Mechademia series is slated to conclude with volume 10 (though our new online R&C site will continue). So if you have been considering a submission to the print volumes, now is a good time to act. We have framed the theme of volume 9 broadly in the hope that a wide range of contributors will be able relate their own current work to it. We welcome submissions in all fields, on premodern as well as modern popular and visual culture.

[Journal] The Dis/Appearance of the Political Crowd in Contemporary China

Guest Edited by Anup Grewal and Tie Xiao. This special issue considers the question of the cultural imaginary of collectivity and mass political action in contemporary China, in comparison to, in light of, and as a departure from its centrality in much of the early and mid twentieth century. We welcome papers that address such themes and others through historical and contemporary perspectives of actual and imagined masses in China and that take up the question of "representation" in all its political and aesthetic connotations. Papers may come from a range of representational and/or media perspectives, including those of film, photography, publicperformance art, popular television drama, literature, architecture, advertising, and official state communications.

[Fellowship] Fellowship in Religious Studies/Jain Studies, Florida International University

"Latika & Rajiv Jain Fellowship in Religious Studies/ Jain Studies" at Florida International University. Candidates are sought for a two-year graduate fellowship to be awarded to a highly qualified and motivated student in Religious Studies with a concentration in Jain Studies. Candidates should have a B.A. (all fields will be considered), an undergraduate GPA higher than 3.5, and meet university requirements for admission. The fellowship will cover tuition, fees and stipend for two academic years and the intervening summer. Study or research in India is possible. It is expected that the holder of this fellowship will pursue an M.A. thesis in Jain studies. Deadline for applications is March 1, 2013, and the fellowship will be tenable from August 2013.

[Journal] Cyber Asia and the New Media

Education About Asia (EAA) is the peer-reviewed teaching journal of the Association for Asian Studies. Our approximately 1,700 readers include undergraduate instructors as well as high school and middle school teachers. Our articles are intended to provide educators, who are often not specialists, with basic understanding of Asia-related content. Qualified referees evaluate all manuscripts submitted for consideration. Most of our subscribers teach and work in history, the social sciences, or the humanities. We are in the process of developing a special section titled "Cyber Asia and the New Media" for the fall 2013 issue of EAA. In this special section, we invite authors to submit manuscripts that assist instructors and students in secondary school and college/university introductory survey courses in the humanities or social sciences to better understand this contemporary topic. Manuscripts are sought where authors depict the impact of recent innovations in digital technology and communications upon politics, entertainment, economics, entrepreneurship, social movements, youth culture, education, and globalization. We welcome manuscripts from teachers, scholars, journalists, or others who have expertise in the topic.

The Journal of Korean Studies has room for a couple more articles for this spring 2013. The Journal of Korean Studies (JKS) is dedicated to providing outstanding articles, from all disciplines on a broad range of historical and contemporary topics concerning Korea. In addition the JKS publishes reviews of the latest Korea-related books.
The JKS is published bi-annually in the fall and spring. The Fall issue is a thematic issue and the Spring issue is a varied topic issue. Article manuscripts, should not exceed 50 double-spaced pages in length. Please submit one hard copy and an electronic copy of the manuscript. (The electronic version can be submitted on disc or via email.) Notes should be at the end of the text. For style and documentation format, consult the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2010).

[Fellowship] The Department of History, National University of Singapore, Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Department of History, National University of Singapore, has launched a scheme called FASS-Postdoctoral Fellowships whereby appointees are required to provide teaching support for the department in addition to research. (FASS refers to Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.) We invite applications for Two (2) Postdoctoral Fellowships.
Candidates are expected to hold a PhD degree or are near completion. One of the postdoctoral fellows should be a historian of Southeast Asia and able to teach general and specialised courses, particularly in the area of Malay history and within that area a focus on a specific topic like pre-1942 intellectual history and the development of major figures and ideas that were key in the development of Malay society and thought. The other position is open but the Department has teaching needs in Southeast Asian History so specialists in addition to Malay history would be welcome. We are also opened to well-qualified candidates in any other area of History. The successful candidate is expected to teach but will have time for research with an aim to publication.
