Award Description:

This award recognizes the importance of teaching and mentoring students as significant components of faculty duties.

Award Selection Guidelines:

The selection committee reads candidates' files closely in order to identify excellence in classroom teaching and student mentorship. In the nominating letter and candidate statement the committee evaluates the candidate’s innovation and evidence-based teaching methods. The committee will also evaluate nominees based on teaching and mentoring activities that that embrace C.U. Boulder's commitment to Inclusive Excellence and have a positive impact on under-served student populations. Finally, the committee evaluates student letters that highlight the unique attributes that make the nominee an excellent professor and mentor.

Nomination Packet Requirements:

Nomination packets MUST include all the following items in this exact order:

  1. Table of Contents
    • You can find it here. Simply check it off as you finish each item to ensure that all nomination packet requirements are met. Once all items are checked off, include this as the first page of your nomination packet.
  2. Contact Information Sheet
    • You must include a page listing the contact information of each person who has contributed a letter of support. Please include their name, institution, title, and e-mail address. A blank template is availble here. This sheet has a 1 page maximum.
  3. Nomination Statement
    • Nomination statements may be authored by more than one person. It should be in letter form and addressed to the BFA Selection Committee. Nomination statements have a 2-page maximum.
  4. Nominee Program Biography
    • Please include a short paragraph (less than 200 words) describing the nominee that will be included in the Excellence Awards program if the nominee is selected for the award. 
  5. Nominee's Personal Statement
    • The nominee's personal statement should address his or her ideas about teaching and pedagogy. Personal statements have a 2-page maximum.
  6. Abbreviated Curriculum Vitae
    • Nominees are encouraged to adjust their CV to highlight their accomplishments pertinent to teaching and pedagogy. CVs have a 4-page maximum.
  7. Internal CU Letters of Support 
    • Include two letters of support from University of Colorado Boulder faculty. Letters may be prepared and jointly signed by more than one person. These letters must be from faculty within the nominee’s home department or from another unit on the Boulder campus. All letters must be addressed to the nominator, not the nominee. Each letter has a 2-page maximum. 
  8. Student Statements of Support
    • All teaching and pedagogy award nominees are required to submit a minimum of two statements of support from students.  These statements can be short paragraphs that have been cut and pasted into one document or they can be traditional letters.The committee will evaluate student letters based on the specific and unique traits of the candidate. These letters should describe specific moments in the classroom or in other realms of mentorship that show exceptional dedication to the craft of teaching or care for students. Successful student letters will describe what happened, why it was impactful, and the long- or short-term effects of the candidate’s teaching The total number of pages for all student statements of support cannot exceed four pages. Letters can be from the following:
      • Current or past CU Boulder undergraduate students
      • Current or past CU Boulder graduate students (as T.A.’s, GPTI's, or mentees)
  9. External Letters of Support
    • Include 2 letters of support from individuals who have good knowledge of the nominee’s contributions and who are not rostered in the nominee’s home department. These letters should be from the extended community, including:
      • CU Boulder faculty who are not rostered in the nominee’s home department
      • Faculty outside of CU Boulder (including faculty from other institutions, or faculty rostered on other CU campuses)
      • Educational administrators - internal or external to CU
      • Other public school (K-12) staff or community partners
    • Letters may be prepared and jointly signed by more than one person. All letters must be addressed to the nominator, not the nominee. Each letter has a 2 page maximum.

Packet Submission Instructions:

  • The full nomination file may not exceed 23 pages, including the table of contents page. A partial page will count as a full page.
  • Materials must be saved as one nomination in a single pdf file titled: NomineeFirstName.NomineeLastName.pdf and emailed to:

Please note:

  • Nominees must be members of the Boulder Faculty Senate as defined by Regent Law. 

  • The selection process gives preference to nominees who have been with the University of Colorado for at least five years.
  • Nominated faculty must be in good standing with the University in order to be considered.
  • Although faculty may receive the award for a given category only once, they are eligible to receive awards in either of the other two categories in different years.

  • If your nominee is selected for the award, every person who contributed a letter of support will be invited to the Excellence Awards ceremony.

  • Nominees who are not selected in a given year may choose to be considered one additional time the following academic year.

*Packets turned in on the weekend will not be given an additional opportunity to fix any issues with their packets. We strongly advise you to turn packets in early, and/or submit a draft for feedback. All packets MUST meet the guidelines listed above in order to be considered complete. This includes total pages in the full packet, total pages for letters, and the number/types of recommendation letters submitted. We are happy to help you determine this prior to the deadline.
