Proteus

Our experience of time in our everyday lives and media tends to be uniform: time is constant wherever we look; however time can be manipulated like any medium. Our Proteus system enables users to explore the time and space in video as a fine-grained and manipulable medium, capable of revealing spatiotemporal patterns, juxtapositions, and narratives.

Proteus was developed into large-scale immersive installation with 270° projection and ambisonics for visitors to explore time across multiple timelapses at different scales and perspectives. Visitors walk around the space holding devices which can be pointed to specific portions of the projection space to open portals into past times. Each portal has a 2D timelapse that interpolates and seemlessly transitions across space and time to reveal changes.

 

Proteus was installed in the Black Box theatre space as part of the B2 Artist Residency program. Developing and delivering the installation was a collaboration with Rishi Vanukuru, Suibi Weng, Ada Zhao, Anika Mahajan, Leo Ma, Krithik Ranjan, and Brad Gallagher.
