AQIQ Lesson 1

What is Air Quality Research?

Paonia Mountain Range

Air quality research is the study of how different activities change the composition of our atmosphere and then trying to understand how those changes could impact human and environmental health.

Lesson 1 provides an introduction to air quality and monitoring technologies.

Lesson: An Introduction to Air Quality Research

Hands-on Activity: Linking Sources and Pollutants

The corresponding video series Air Quality Monitoring Devices and Intro to AQ-IQ is intended to supplement this lesson.

The learning objectives are for the students to be able to:

  • List and describe the three primary reasons to study air quality (health effects, aesthetics, and climate change)

  • Define the difference between primary and secondary pollutants, and gas-phase and particulate pollutants

  • Explain the different sources of CO2, VOCs and NO2

This Module includes:

  • Pre-Survey

  • PowerPoint Lecture

  • Vocabulary List

  • Linking Sources and Pollutants Activity

  • Critical Thinking Questions
