Soil quality research is the study of the characteristics, composition, and health of a soil sample and how these factors impact the soil's ability to perform it's intended function.


 

Lesson 1 provides an introduction to soil quality and monitoring technologies.

The learning objectives for the introductory lesson are for the students to be able to:

  • Describe how soil is formed and classified.
  • Described 5 reasons why studying soil quality is important: five essential functions of soil.
  • Understand how indicators (soil properties) are used to assess soil quality.
  • Understand how to use the SQIQ pods to answer soil quality questions.

The learning objectives for the soil respiration lesson are for students to be able to:

  • Understand what soil respiration is.
  • Understanding when and how to use soil respiration as a soil quality indicator. 
  • Complete a soil respiration test on a collected soil sample.
