During the fall of 1988 with the assistance of the CU-Boulder Alumni Association, a group of graduates came together for the purpose of beginning an association. The Black Alumni Organization, as it was initially called, wanted to assist the university in its recruitment and retention for Black students, faculty and staff, to raise monies for scholarships and other financial aid, and to increase the involvement of Black alumni on the campus. In the spring of 1989, when the formal organization — the CU-Boulder Black Alumni Association — was chartered, these same goals and missions were adopted.
