Biography
Michelle’s interests center on the interplay of identity and political authority in the Lower Río Verde Valley during the Terminal Formative and the Early Classic periods, and since 2008, Michelle has been working at the site of Charco Redondo. Her consideration of the social and political aspects of identity performance is expressed in the examination of how communal mortuary practices, which have been linked to political authority in the Formative period, were transformed in the Early Classic after the collapse of the region’s first state-level polity. Michelle is also concerned with how interregional interaction, particularly with Teotihuacan, also influenced identity and political authority during this period of political decentralization in the Lower Rio Verde Valley. Michelle has received a number of grants to fund her research and the writing of her dissertation, including a UCR Dissertation Year Fellowship and UC MEXUS Dissertation Research Grant. Michelle received her BA and MA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and is currently finishing her dissertation at the University of California, Riverside under the advisement of Dr. Wendy Ashmore.
