Inclusive Communities of Practice (ICoP)

ODECE hosted ICoP to spark conversations about inclusive excellence. As a result of those gatherings an Inclusivity Network was formed and is now housed in the Center for Teaching and Learning. ICoP provides opportunities where faculty, staff and students can talk openly about addressing issues of inequity and racism, and work on developing inclusive practices for everyday lived experiences on campus, in the classroom, research environments, and in the workplace.

Complimenting the ICoP meetings is a self-paced anti-racism pedagogy Canvas course offered by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) which provides guidance for reading, listening and reflecting and includes facilitated support to move through stages of racial identity development. You are invited to join the Canvas community and engage virtually.

Historical Background:

  • Beginning in 2016-2017, ODECE initiated an Inclusive Pedagogy Workshop series to highlight expert practices in making excellence inclusive, thereby beginning to address the top request (for increased resources) from the Inclusive Excellence narratives.
  • Inclusive communities of practice, focus on best practices in classroom and workplace environments and are open to the entire CU Boulder community
  • During the fall of 2020 the Center for Teaching and Learning became the hub of inclusive pedagogy workshops, communities of practice dialogues, facilitated reading groups, seminars, and consultations that support teaching and learning at CU Boulder.

April 27, 2020: Native and Indigenous at CU Boulder

Join us for a session with Andrew Cowell, Director of the Center for Native American and Indigenous Studies (CNAIS). He'll open with a short presentation on the current discussions on campus about the need for a Land Acknowledgment related to indigenous presence in Colorado and the history of CU Boulder. The session will move to a discussion of this particular issue, its origins, and suggestions for future progress. Cowell will then talk more generally about some of the particular challenges that indigenous students, staff and faculty continue to face on the CU Boulder campus specifically, and how the broader community can be more effective and supportive allies for this particular CU group, in a spirit of inclusiveness that also recognizes the unique status of Native Americans in the US as well as at CU Boulder.

March 30, 2020: CANCELED

March 9, 2020: Finding the "Us" in Inclusion: What do you need to be an inclusive educator?

We will start with an overview of inclusive practices for the classroom. Participants will determine the gap between intent and impact by examining written reflections of underrepresented students on our campus regarding campus climate and sense of belonging. Using the student voice as a platform, we will discuss and develop activities that the Center for Teaching and Learning could provide to meet the needs of faculty, graduate students and instructors to become inclusive educators.

Feb. 24, 2020: Authenticity or Plantation Politics

Intersectionality has achieved intellectual acknowledgment as a critical consciousness tool for which there is scant evidence of pedagogical practice in universities.  Following Susan Jones’, an Ohio University professor, research on leadership development, this session will examine ways of “incorporating attention to multiple social identities and larger structures of inequality.”   The exploration and discussion will provide an opportunity for attendees to grapple with the question “Who is the University of Colorado Boulder in the DEI world?  It is an authentic DEI practitioner or a purveyor of Plantation Politics?

Feb. 10, 2020: Be Who? Storytelling as a Conceptual Pathway From Opportunity to Engagement

College is routinely described as an opportunity for students to become anyone they want to be—for “you to be you” as CU Boulder celebrates—and academic exploration is encouraged as a way to find the “right path.” But what happens when your interests lead you to opportunities where you feel like an imposter? We will explore how storytelling can chart conceptual pathways to transformative ways of thinking about the self that allow students to take risks in the exploration of potential identities and find belonging in new contexts.  We will practice using flexible narrative structures to tell the stories of the impressive and often intimidating people they encounter on their path of self-discovery.

Jan. 27, 2020: Anti-Racist Practices in Teaching and Learning

Grounded in theory, anti-racist pedagogy practices are founded in transparency and critical thinking. Join us for a session that delves into ways to take your inclusive teaching and learning practices and deepen them further--to become actively anti-racist. We'll look at everything from syllabus statements to content and assessment design to individual positionality--everything is fair game for a conversation that invites us to re-examine the role of anti-racist pedagogy across disciplines.

Jan. 13, 2020Policy on Workplace Bullying

The CU Boulder campus adopted a policy last summer prohibiting bullying in the workplace. Join us in this session to learn more about what the campus definition of workplace bullying is, the implications of this policy, and a discussion about the interplay of this new policy, academic freedom and freedom of expression.

Eight Monday Sessions: All took place in CASE W313 | 10:30 am - 12 noon unless otherwise noted

9/9/2020  Equity and High Impact Practices | Rec Center Middle Meeting Room

Description:  Come explore the equity component to High Impact Practices (HIPs) for education! Whether you are new to HIPs or are already hip to HIPs, this session will help participants identify and articulate how HIPs are connected to equity. We’ll explore how HIPs are associated with disproportionately positive outcomes for students from low-income and historically underserved backgrounds. We’ll look at examples of how HIPs can benefit students holistically across their student experience. Lastly, we’ll engage in a discussion of how equity can become a more ingrained lens for all kinds of learning experiences through a few easily applied tactics.

9/23/2020  Mindful mentorship best practices

Description: Who do you mentor? By whom are you mentored? In this session we will discuss mentoring scenarios from the perspectives of the mentor and mentee, to consider how we can get the most out of these formative relationships. We will discuss how we can attend to potential issues of equity and inclusion, as well as take time to plan for our future mentoring interactions. This session is open to students, faculty, and staff from all corners of the university.

10/7/2020  Effective feedback for students

Description: How do students know that they are on track to meet the learning goals for your course? In this session we will discuss why it is important to give students feedback during the learning process, when to time this feedback for the most student impact, and how to give effective feedback while attending to possible issues of equity and inclusion. This work session is targeted for anyone who gives feedback to students, or who wants to learn and practice research-validated strategies for giving feedback within the workplace.

10/21/2020  Inclusive meetings best practices

Description: Join us for a conversation about ways we might create environments in campus meetings that encourage differing thoughts and opinions, a sense of belonging and participation from all attendees. Discuss the ways that meetings can be more inclusive, beginning in the planning stages, guidelines for during the meeting, norms of collaboration, and meeting activities. Come prepared to share ideas, problem-solve current meeting issues and learn ways to make excellence inclusive in our meeting spaces.

11/4 /2020  Gender dynamics in STEM/Research environments

Description: Gain awareness of and the ability to interrupt sexism in research and creative environments on campus and beyond so that these high-impact spaces are empowering places for women and members of the LGBTQ community.

11/18/2020  Habits of inclusion for classroom culture

Description: Join us as we share effective practices for creating and sustaining an inclusive learning environment for everyone. We’ll start out with an exemplar syllabus statement and encourage you to think about how to improve your own syllabi. We’ll then examine a few key practices, share extensive resources, and engage in discussion to mine the expertise in the room.

12/2/2020  Mindful, Inclusive Mentorship (building on our session from 9/23)

Description: In our first mentorship session on September 23, we talked through some challenging mentoring scenarios with an implicit equity and inclusion lens (access here). In this follow up session, we will spend time on the “mindful” part of effective mentoring. How can we attend to equity and inclusion as a mentor? What does it mean for a mentor to be inclusive? We welcome participants from the first “mindful mentoring” session, as well as students, faculty, and staff from all corners of the University of Colorado community.
