Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an environmentally friendly strategy that focuses on the removal and long-term prevention of pests (insects) and wildlife through a combination of techniques and practices. Harsh poisonous pesticides are never used. Treatments are made with the goal of removing only the targeted pest or wildlife. Pest control materials are selected and applied in a manner that minimizes risks to human health, prevents any damage to beneficial and non-target organisms or the environment.

Contact the Housing Facilities Services Service Desk at 303-735-5555 to report any pest or wildlife issue and they will alert IPM. Note that the University of Colorado Boulder’s IPM and Wildlife management department handles all pest and wildlife problems on campus. Periodically a decision is made by the IPM manager to call outside entities such as Colorado Parks and Wildlife or Boulder Animal Control. IPM and Wildlife management is the only department authorized to contact these outside agencies for campus issues; examples are if we have an injured animal that needs to be euthanized or rehabilitated or a bat that needs to be tested for rabies. Specific to bats, if we know for certain a bat has bitten a person, Boulder Animal Control will be called for rabies testing. We do not recommend getting the painful rabies treatment if you have no bites or scratches or you have only observed a bat. These bites and small scratches will be quite painful at first and you will know if you have been bitten. Bat bites are rare and they only happen when the bat is threatened. This is the season for these situations since the weather is turning cooler and the windows are being opened at night. Remember the bat is terrified of you and will not engage unless you try to touch it or pick it up. Do not touch the animal for any reason.
