Linguistics • Family Medicine (CU Anschutz School of Medicine)

Chase Wesley Raymond is an Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics, as well as a core faculty member in the interdepartmental Program in Culture, Language, and Social Practice (CLASP). He also holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Family Medicine, at the University of Colorado, Anschutz School of Medicine. Prior to coming to CU-Boulder, he was a Visiting Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

Formally trained in both Hispanic Linguistics (PhD, UCLA, 2014) and Sociology (PhD, UCLA, 2016), Prof. Raymond is an interdisciplinary scholar of language and social life. In his research and teaching, he brings together theories and methods from Conversation Analysis, Interactional Linguistics, Pragmatics, and Sociolinguistics to investigate language use in both mundane and institutional contexts, exploring how interactants ‘make sense’ with one another on a moment-by-moment basis as they move through interaction. He is particularly interested in situations of contact -- that is, when divergent languages, dialects, cultures, etc. come together in interaction -- with a primary focus on various aspects of the Latinx and Spanish-speaking experience in the United States. His work has appeared in a disciplinarily diverse set of journals which range from Linguistics (e.g., Language, Language in Society, Journal of Sociolinguistics), to Communication Studies (e.g., Research on Language and Social Interaction, Discourse & Communication), to Healthcare (e.g., Patient Education and Counseling).
