High school researchers in the field

Angela and Kathryn mentored two high school students over the summer from Lafayette, Alex and Kay, through CU Science Discovery (see photo at right)—a rewarding experience that immersed youth from throughout Colorado in their own research projects. They taught them how to carry out bird surveys, keep a field notebook, read a scientific paper, and give a poster presentation. They also spent a lot of time hiking around the flatirons with Alex and Kay, identifying potential future field sites. It was cool to see their perceptions of birds change throughout the experience and to see them engaging in new ways with their environments.
