M330: Prep Notes

Introduction

Six balloons tied together in a bunch arrange themselves in an octahedral fashion.  As balloons are popped the resulting number conforms to the molecular shapes of VSEPR theory.

Prior to Lecture  (prep time ~ 30 min.)

  1. Inflate six same-sized balloons with air.
  2. Pull six strands of yarn through a foot-long, hollow glass or plastic tube.
  3. Tie one strand to each balloon.
  4. Provide a pencil or other sharp object for popping balloons.
