Preston was awarded a Buzzard Graduate Scholarship from Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU). The scholarship was named after GTU founder, Dr. Robert G. Buzzard, and is given to students who show contributions to their GTU chapter and their department. See GTU Scholarship Recipients for more information.

Preston was awarded the Department of Geography Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award - GPTI.

Preston received the Top TA/GPTI award for 2012 from the United Government of Graduate Students.

The Hazel Schmoll Award is presented by the CU Herbarium. Preston will use the funds to support his work titled “Do changes in yearly fine-scale soil properties affect native and non-native species colonization patterns?”

Preston will use the award to travel to Portland, Oregon to attend the annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America. See United Government of Graduate Students for more information.

The Department of Geography received an Assett (Arts and Sciences Support of Education Through Technology) award relating to the use of technology primarily for teaching and learning. Preston received the National Science Foundation (NSF) Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Award through the Geography and Spatial Sciences Program for his research entitled "Does Change in Fine-Scale Soil Properties After Fire Stimulate Exotic Species Colonization?"

Preston received this award through the Graduate School's John Marr Ecology Fund. Its purpose is to provide grants of $300 to $1000 for Ph.D. candidates doing field research in plant ecology in the Rocky Mountains or the Arctic.
