The NIH National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) recently awarded our lab a 4-year $2.4 R01 grant to investigate the research and development of oxygen microbubbles for treating acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).  ARDS affectes nearly 10% of patients that arrive to the intensive care unit, and the mortality rate remains stubbornly fixed near 40%.  Oxygen microbubbles may provide life-sustaining oxygen during refractory hypoxemia and reduce the risk of ventilator induced lung injury.  The grant includes collaborations with researchers Keely Beusing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Benjamin Terry at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
