3. Consider these academic programs

Art Practices

The Department of Art and Art History offers majors and minors that allow you to explore your interests and refine skills in art history, ceramics, IMAP (photography, digital media, video, integrated arts), painting and drawing, printmaking and sculpture and post-studio practice. Gain a broad understanding of the field of contemporary art, and gain experience in contemporary art practices while pursuing a liberal arts degree.

Music

The College of Music offers a range of programs for undergraduate study. Students benefit from an array of classes and ensembles, in addition to one-on-one instruction from dedicated faculty, while flexible curricula combine tradition and innovation to help students reach their personal career goals.

Theatre

The Theatre department offers five undergraduate degree programs, including a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Technology. Graduates of theatre may pursue careers as playwrights, designers, technicians, directors, teachers and actors. Theatre graduates have a broad liberal arts background that is sound preparation for many careers, both related to the arts and otherwise.

Dance

CU’s contemporary dance program values and provides study in a range of styles and fusion of forms that influence and reflect the multifaceted nature of concert dance today. The curriculum is designed to develop concrete skills in performance and choreography and to instill an appreciation of the role that dance plays in human culture around the world.

Technology, Arts and Media

This program teaches a diverse and robust skillset that is not confined to specific disciplines like “graphic design” or “digital art.” The curriculum infuses creativity into technology and integrates a technically rigorous education with critical thinking, problem solving and creative production. The program attracts designers, makers, tinkerers and builders, including those with unorthodox perspectives and unconventional approaches to technology.

Advertising, Public Relations and Media Design

In this program, you’ll learn how to generate ideas and solve problems for brands and issues through a design-thinking process grounded in analytical and creative thought. You’ll focus on at least one area of strategic communication and design that will enable you to generate ideas and solve problems for a variety of organizations, including ad agencies, PR firms, publishing and design firms, nonprofits, start-ups and personal ventures.

Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts

Develop an informed, analytical understanding of cinema’s aesthetics and impact on society and culture. You’ll also acquire career-relevant technical proficiency on various film, video and digital formats, post-production, screenwriting, and visual and media literacy. The program also offers multiple approaches to narrative, animation, documentary, mobile and new media formats and experimental cinema practices.

Art History

Art history courses encourage you to consider stylistic, historical, intellectual and critical analyses of works of art from many different historical and contemporary periods and cultures. Students in this program become adept writers, thinkers and cultural leaders. Curatorial positions in museums and galleries, library work, public relations, commercial illustration, advertising, marketing and publishing are areas that use skills acquired by art graduates.

Music Technology certificate

The curriculum for this certificate program consists of a variety of courses designed to provide a strong background in using technology to compose and produce music. The courses range from an introductory survey of music software and hardware to in depth studies of DSP, synthesis, algorithmic composition, recording and post-production techniques, film scoring and many other topics. The software used in many of the classes includes Logic Pro, ProTools, Abelton Live, Finale, Lilypond, MAX, PD, SuperCollider, CSound, Final Cut Pro, Audacity, SoundHack and Spear.
