Dear Addie: Any ideas on how I can create a more fun living space?

Dear Addie, I’m spending a lot of time in my room. It’s where I sleep, study, virtually hang with friends - so basically I am in here 24/7. Any ideas on how I can create a space that feels calming but also fun? - Interior Design Challenged Isabella

Hey Isabella, I’m experiencing the same issue as I continue to self-isolate during Colorado’s stay-at-home order. It seems like the days are blurring together and that I can’t separate my home enough between normal life and work/school life. After thinking about it for a while, I have a couple ideas for you to try out in your own space.

Try rearranging your room. You’d be surprised by how much this can make you feel both productive and like you’re in an entirely new space. If you can, try to separate your room in such a way where you have a place to do your school work and a place to relax. By keeping them both in different areas, it won’t feel like you’re in the same spot 24/7.

While it may also seem like you are stuck in your room, it is still possible to go outside. Please remember that if you are going out, follow your local social distancing guidelines and recommendations. In Colorado, the governor has recommended everyone wear a homemade mask while conducting essential business or spending time outdoors. Do you have an outdoor spot nearby where you can do homework outdoors while following your local guidelines? The fresh air mixed with the sun will instantly improve your mood. At least, that’s what it does for me! You could also try breaking up your time indoors with a walk!  Every day, I like to take a 30-minute walk after lunch to refresh my mind.

My last tip would be to look for items around your space that you could use to liven up where you live. Whether that’s swapping out your picture frames with new photos or dipping back into your holiday decorations for those twinkly lights. Any excuse to pull out holiday decorations (even if they are not in season) is a win in my book.

Try out these few simple ideas and see if they help!
