Know before you go: Diversity & Inclusion Summit

We encourage you to attend the Diversity & Inclusion Summit from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25 in the University Memorial Center.  The summit this year will address how we move from merely talking about diversity and inclusion to how we model behaviors and practices that allow us to get back to the heart of who our actions impact.  Before you go to the summit there are a few things you should know.

The day will consist of multiple sessions

The Diversity & Inclusion Summit is a full day event, but you can come and go as your schedule allows. Each session is a little over an hour and will cover a variety of topics around diversity.  Some of your fellow students will also be hosting sessions, so be sure to support them by attending their sessions. We’ve highlighted some student sessions below.

  • Listening to international student voices
    • In this panel discussion, international students will share their experiences as members of the CU Boulder community. Attendees will learn about challenges students have faced because of their international status.
  • SPEAK: Supporting Womxn’s Voices for Civic Participation
    • CU students who are students in the Performing Voices of Womxn taught by Beth Osnes will express of their support of womxn’s voices through declarations, song and short scenes based on issues impacting womxn on the CU campus and beyond.
  • Student Unplugged: Communicating Effectively and Authentically
    • This facilitated session with CU Boulder leadership from ODECE and Strategic Relations and Communications will challenge participants to consider the intentionality and embedded meanings behind everyday communications. Join us for a session that will focus on listening, sharing personal stories and working on concrete strategies to improve communications between students and university administration.

Have an open mind

When attending sessions, it’s important that you have an open mind. Some of the topics may challenge your typical beliefs and ways of thinking, but that’s okay! The only way you will learn is by exposing yourself to new ideas.

Ask questions

We encourage you to actively participate and ask questions during your sessions. If you don’t understand something, speak up! You aren’t expected to have a full understanding of any topic covered throughout the summit. After all, the point of the entire day is to learn.

CU Boulder has two diversity summits each year

If you are unable to attend this year’s summit, have no fear. The Office of Diversity, Equity & Engagement hosts two summits every year, one in the fall and one in the spring. Each one has its own theme and different sessions so if you are inclined you can attend both.
