Want a memorable spring break? Take an Alternative Break trip

Alternative Breaks sends teams of college students to engage in community-based service projects during spring break. These student-led volunteer trips focus on making a positive impact on environmental and social justice issues in various communities.

Here are four reasons to go all in and take an Alternative Break trip this spring.

Find community and meet like-minded people

Not only will you be able to make a positive change through taking an Alternative Break trip, but you can find community with the people you are traveling with. Build relationships and memories with fellow Buffs all with a common goal. Did we mention that you’ll be traveling to a destination in a 12-passenger van? Talk about the ultimate road trip!

Do something productive with your break at a relatively low cost

Taking an extravagant spring break trip isn’t always friendly to your wallet.  Alternative Break spring break trips cost $200 per person which includes transportation, food, lodging, community partner fees, and some entertainment activities.  For a relatively low cost, you can visit a new place and make a difference through participating in service projects.

The Alternative Breaks program also has many scholarships available, just indicate interest and need when submitting the Participant Application. In addition, students may apply for the Casey Feldman Scholarship.

Learn about yourself

Stepping out of our comfort zone is key to personal growth. This is a great way to learn not only about issues affecting other communities but to learn more about yourself outside of the classroom.

Add to your résumé

Volunteering gives your résumé the hands-on experience you need. Alternative Break trips can help you gain valuable skills such as team building, communication and problem solving all of which are appealing to future employers.

Still not conviced? Hear from someone who's been on an Alternative Break trip!

Alternative Breaks has been one of the most rewarding experiences that I have had at CU! It connects fellow students with each other and issues that face the world today. Through each of the trips that I have participated in and led, I have learned the complexities of many issues, engaged with diverse communities and had my perceptions challenged and altered.

All of these trips I participated in have been incredibly rewarding and continually challenge my perspectives. After serving in communities around the country, I was able to bring the knowledge and skills back to Boulder to improve ours. I am excited to be leading another trip this year, and cannot wait to see what my participants and I will learn.
