Let’s Get Real: What if I don’t think CU has the right major for me?

Deciding what to major in can be tough. Sometimes the school where you are studying does not have the right program for you. Are you worried CU doesn’t offer the degree you are interested in? We want you to find the right place for you, and we realize it might not be at CU Boulder.

Talk to your advisor

Make an appointment with your advisor and talk through what you want to study. Share with them your interests and possible programs of study. Your advisor may be able to point you toward a class, degree program or internship that sparks your interest. Your advisor can also help you navigate the possibility of transferring to another school.

According to data from Department of Education, around 25% of students transfer at some point during their college experience. The reasons for transferring vary from financial considerations to family obligations to degree decisions. While we would love for you to stay at CU Boulder, we understand sometimes it is best to pursue your passions elsewhere.

Consider the pros and cons of transferring

Transferring to another school can affect your academic degree progress. Explore Transferology to see how your coursework from CU Boulder might transfer to another school. You can plug in the courses you have already completed to see how they may or may not transfer to another school.

Many universities also have a website specifically for transfer applicants, which may help you navigate your academic coursework questions.

It is important to consider the financial impacts of transferring to another institution, as well. If you are on scholarship with CU Boulder, your scholarship will not transfer to another institution. Scholarships from outside organizations may or may not be eligible if you transfer. It is a good idea to contact those organizations before you transfer.

Your financial aid package also may be impacted. Financial aid counselors are available to answer your questions in person or over the phone during walk-in hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Leaving CU Boulder

If you decide to leave CU Boulder, you will need to complete the formal withdrawal process. Talk to your advisor before completing this step.
