Hazard Assessments & Inspections

The Laser Safety Officer (LSO) conducts hazard assessments for all Class 3B and Class 4 lasers to ensure safety controls are in place, based on factors like laser specifications, usage, environment, and personnel. Assessments include, but are not limited to, non-beam hazards, eyewear requirements, nominal hazard distances, and emergency procedures. These evaluations are documented in SciShield and reviewed regularly, especially if there are changes in laser operations or if an accidental exposure occurs.

In addition, laser facilities are inspected every three years by the LSO to ensure compliance with the Laser Safety Program. Inspections cover hazard analysis, signage, training, and control measures. Findings are recorded in SciShield, and lab personnel have 30 days to address any issues. If unresolved, the LSO may escalate the matter or halt operations if an immediate hazard is present.
