Julie Byle, EBIO graduate student, has secured an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. She plans to create an interdisciplinary program studying the relationship between traditional scientific education--using, for example, conceptual tools such as the scientific method and hierarchical classification systems of taxonomy--and indigenous ways of knowing. The program will focus on the ways that different cultural conceptions of nature and humanity's relationship with it affect how nature is understood by students. Byle also wants the program to provide hands-on outdoor learning environments instead of classrooms. Read more about her achievement and plans for the grant here!
