Duncan Purves

Duncan Purves, PhD, is an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Florida. His work focuses on the applied ethics of emerging technologies, especially moral decision-making by artificial intelligence systems. He has published extensively on this topic as well as other topics in applied and theoretical ethics, especially the nature and normative significance of harm, well-being, and the ethical treatment of non-human animals. He served as co-PI on National Science Foundation (NSF) award #1917707 to develop empirically grounded and ethically informed recommendations for the development and deployment of predictive policing technologies. He holds a BA from the University of Missouri and a PhD in philosophy from the University of Colorado Boulder.
