Lead LA Mentors Support LA Growth and Develop as Leaders

Betsy Feldman, PhD, CU Faculty
At the University of Colorado Boulder, Lead Learning Assistant (LA) Mentors are experienced LAs who are trained to support first-semester and experienced LAs through the challenges and successes of their interactions with students. Lead LA Mentors have four main goals: (1) Support the pedagogical development of first-semester LAs through individual and small group feedback; (2) Co-facilitate Returning LA Professional Development meetings that encourage community and help LAs see themselves as continuous learners; (3) Mentor and be mentored by other LA Mentors to collectively explore what it means to be leaders in learner-centered academic innovation within the LA Program and CU Boulder more broadly; (4) Provide feedback to, and develop interventions with, LA Program leadership about LA and LA Mentor experiences across course and departmental contexts. Come chat with this semester's Lead LA Mentors about what we have learned by working with LAs with a diverse array of experiences, and the ways that institutions can provide support to their LAs and opportunities for continued leadership!
